From Cleaning to Leading

Stories of Transformation

A Hindu cleaning lady came to faith in Jesus. During one of her church’s meetings, they studied the Great Commission, and she was moved by this. She decided that she wanted to go out and share the gospel. However, she faced two daunting issues: First, was the fact that she was a new follower of Jesus and didn’t know much about God or his Word. Second, she thought, her biggest problem was that she was also unable to read. She couldn’t read the Bible for herself or for anyone else.

So, the Disciple Making Movement leader in her church met with her. He told her, “Sister, when God says, ‘Go out and share the gospel,’ he’s not saying that just to the church leaders. He’s also saying it to every disciple. A disciple is someone who obeys Jesus and walks with him. You are a disciple, so you can go out and share the gospel. The Holy Spirit is with you and will guide you and speak through your mouth.”

So, she began meeting with that leader to listen to and memorize audio stories from the Bible. With a new sense of confidence, she shared with a neighbor that Jesus came to the world to save sinners. The neighbor wanted to know more about this Jesus. The cleaning lady shared with her the first story she had memorized. She also told her friend, “Next week I will come back and tell you another story. But before then, you go out and whatever you have experienced in your life because of this story, you go and share it with someone. And next week, bring more people with you.”

The neighbor went out and shared what she had heard, and the next week brought two ladies with her. The cleaning lady began her first Discovery Bible Study with the three of them.

The cleaning lady continued to listen to and memorize stories, beginning with Creation and moving to Christ and his life, and the group began to grow and multiply. Since that first group, she has seen ten Discovery groups started, some of them second and third-generation groups, with a total of 80 to 100 new followers of Jesus.

All these discovery groups trace their history back to one woman hearing the Bible stories, memorizing them, and passing them on.

Now she is coaching nine leaders by phone. She helps them when they get stuck to move beyond whatever is holding them back, so they can keep growing, and keep multiplying disciples.

We are helping people like this very leader who are unable to read by recording audio Scripture sets! Through recording Scripture in ways people can hear and understand, the gospel is traveling even farther and sparking Discovery Bible Studies along the way!
