Murderers Lead Church Plants

Stories of Transformation

God Uses Unlikely Leaders

At New Generations, we often talk about the “unlikely leaders” God chooses to use for building His Kingdom. What’s amazing is, this isn’t new. God used unlikely leaders all throughout Scripture.

Moses was an unlikely spiritual leader of the people of Israel. He couldn’t give an eloquent speech on his own.

David was an unlikely spiritual leader as King. He committed adultery and murder.

Peter was an unlikely spiritual leader for God’s Church. He had an impulsive and sometimes reckless temper.

And yet, time and time again, God worked through broken and sinful individuals to bring about His redemptive plan to reach more and more through these leaders. They shared a common thread of brokenness. But they also shared something more important – a willingness to follow and obey God.

Krishna’s Story

Today, we’d like to tell you about Krishna. You might say Krishna is an unlikely leader for God’s Kingdom…

We first met Krishna in prison as he served a sentence for being convicted of murder. Rather than being interested in learning through a Bible study, Krishna would tear out pages from the Bible and use them to roll and smoke dope. At the time, he was so ill with tuberculosis that he was vomiting up blood.

As leaders of the prison fellowship, we decided to pray for Krishna. Over time, he was healed of his tuberculosis and ultimately put his faith in Jesus!

Later as his criminal case was being reviewed, no one came to testify against Krishna. His case was dismissed, and he was released early. He continuously cried with much guilt – confessing that he had committed a great sin and that he should not have done it.

When released, we met him again outside the jail and Krishna joined our DMM trainees. Not too long after that, we invited him (along with another brother named Sai, who was also convicted of murder and serving 17 years in prison) to be part of the church-centric oral Bible translation team for their village’s language. They both made significant contributions and Krishna became the technician. As a natural leader, he helped not only translate passages into his own language but also into three other languages in his cluster of four languages.

Now the audio Bible passages are being used to share the good news of Jesus with many

people who are experiencing the same freedom in Christ that Krishna discovered. Together they have seen 17 new Discovery Bible Studies started and eight churches planted with more than 120 disciples!
